Description

Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma (NPC) is a type of head and neck cancer and itis one of the top ten cancer killers in Hong Kong. It has a particularly highincidence in Southeast Asia, especially in Guangdong and Guangxi in MainlandChina and in Hong Kong, it’s known as the“Cantonese Cancer”.

Symptoms: nosebleed, headache and ringing in the ears

Many patients do not have any signs or symptoms untilNPC reaches an advanced stage. Historical data shows that approximately 80% ofunscreened patients are diagnosed with advanced NPC. Late-stage NPC is moredifficult to treat than early-stage NPC and the survival rate within 5 yearscould be less than 60%.

Currently, there is no vaccination for the preventionof NPC as a type of virus-associated cancer. Early cancer screening is the oneof the ways to secure a significantly better prognosis as it can helpidentifying asymptomatic NPC at a significantly earlier stage, which allowsearly interventions and treatments that greatly increase the chance ofsuccessful treatment and better prognosis.
