Description

Td (Tetanus, Diphtheria) Vaccine1 dose

Diphtheria

Diphtheria bacilli can cause a grayish-white film to form on the nose, tonsils, pharynx, and larynx. Symptoms of diphtheria include fever, sore throat, hoarseness, and difficulty breathing. The toxins it secretes can cause complications such as myocarditis, myoparalysis, or neuritis, which can be fatal in severe cases. Diphtheria is generally transmitted through contact with an infected person. Contact with objects contaminated with the secretions of an infected person can also lead to diphtheria, but the chance is lower.

Tetanus

Tetanus bacilli, after entering a deep wound, release toxins in an anaerobic environment. Symptoms include trismus, muscle contractions and pain, and limb spasms; severe cases can be fatal.

Persons Requiring Vaccination

The diphtheria and tetanus combined vaccine is effective in preventing both of these infectious diseases. Children in Hong Kong should generally be vaccinated with a combined vaccine against diphtheria, tetanus, acellular pertussis, and inactivated polio. However, children who are not suitable for vaccines containing the pertussis component should receive the diphtheria and tetanus combined vaccine.

Timing of Injection

To achieve full and long-lasting immunity, children need to receive three doses of the diphtheria and tetanus combined vaccine within one year of birth (starting at two months of age, with each dose at least four weeks apart), and a booster dose at one and a half years of age. Two additional booster doses should be given in Primary 1 and Primary 6. The diphtheria and tetanus combined vaccine can be administered together with other vaccines.

Persons Not Suitable for Injection

Those who have had an allergic reaction to the diphtheria and tetanus combined vaccine or any component of the vaccine.

Risks of Injection

Like all medications, the diphtheria and tetanus combined vaccine may cause adverse reactions. Most people who receive the diphtheria and tetanus combined vaccine do not experience serious reactions. If redness or swelling at the injection site or fever occurs after the injection (usually within three days after injection), parents can treat it with antipyretics and analgesics (such as Panadol). If difficulty breathing, shock, or other (very rare) occurs, seek immediate medical attention at the emergency room.

* A customer who is assessed by themedical professionals to be unfit for vaccination will be refunded the amountpaid after deducting an assessment fee of HKD200.
